Beautiful weather is upon us and it's that time of year when we load the family in the car and get out and explore nature. If you live in the northeastern part of the United States or plan to visit over the next few months, here are 3 state parks that you should consider visiting.
Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire
Franconia Notch State Park is located in the White Mountains in northern New Hampshire. Its stunning landscape has brought artists and tourists here for many decades to enjoy its dramatic cliffs, tall peaks, and deep valleys. The parks trails provide great views of the surrounding area.
One of the parks most iconic features, the Old Man of the Mountain, was lost back in 2003 when it collapsed. However, there is much more to still see. You can take the Canon Mountain Aerial Tramway to the top of Canon Mountain for some of the best views around. There's also my personal favorite destination, the Flume Gorge, which brings you through a natural chasms with beautiful waterfalls. This is not to be missed.
If you find yourself here in the winter months, Canon Mountain is fun place to ski but bundle up, this part of the state often has some of the coldest temperatures.
Letchworth State Park in New York
Letchworth State Park is often referred to the "Grand Canyon of the East". The parks deep gorges and awesome waterfalls provide for a beautiful landscape to explore.
In the 19th century, William Pryor Letchworth purchased about 1,000 acres of land along the river that forms this gorge. He dedicated his life to conserving the land, deeding his estate to the state of New York.
Today, you can hike the numerous trails (over 60 miles worth) around the park and enjoy its impressive waterfalls. You can also explore Letchworth's estate, known as Glen Iris, which is now a museum and inn.
Bash Bish Falls State Park in Massachusetts
Bash Bish Falls State Park is located along the border of Massachusetts and New York. You can access the park from parking lots in both states (Right now, Spring 2024, the Massachusetts lot is closed for construction).
Bash Bish Falls is the tallest waterfall in Massachusetts. It's made up of a series of falls with the largest being about 60 feet tall. Like the other parks, there are plenty of hiking opportunities throughout. This is place you want to go on warm sunny day so you can cool off with a swim or bring a lunch for an afternoon picnic.
These parks are a great way to get outside, together with your family, and enjoy the nice weather and the beautiful scenery. All three parks are now included in the Duckwyn Travel Passport. Each containing their own stamp and sticker for you to collect along with trivia questions and quests to complete.
Enjoy your trip and let us know what you think!
